Letter Recognition
This is when your child can name individuals letters.
Believe it or not, but being able to say the alphabet, or sing the alphabet song is not the same as letter recognition. This is why it is completely normal and appropriate to teach your child the letters of the alphabet a seemingly "random" pattern.
Learning to recognize letters is just memorizing symbols and names! Just like your child can name animals, and repeat animal sounds- they will also be able to memorize, name and repeat the sounds of letters in time!
Letter Sounds
Phonics is another term for letter sounds. Phonics is the correlation of sounds with letters to form words.
Understanding phonics is an important step in your child's journey to reading independently. Helping your child learn letter sounds feels like an incredibly overwhelming task- but I promise you can do it!
It is easier than you think to help your child learn letters.
Step 1: Decide on an activity- luckily for you, I have several to choose from at the bottom of this page!
Step 2: Pick a "theme"- what I mean by this, is you are going to choose the thing your child is most interested in, and add a little special touch to the activity that incorporates that "theme". For example, if your child is interested in Dinosaurs, you might create a "dinosaur dig" experience from the free PDF downloads found on this website.
Step 3: Gather Supplies- collect all of the materials you need into one convenient spot. You will find that you really don't need many supplies to create a fun and engaging learning activity for your child! If you are feeling overwhelmed by this task, take a look at my supply list to see if you have any of the materials at home already!
Step 4: Set up the Activity- The activities I am sharing with you take less than 10 minute, often less than 5 minutes to create. I have found that simple activities are more engaging for littles than elaborate activities.
Step 5: Let your child play and explore! When you are helping your child learn the alphabet, use lots of repetition. Say the name of the letter over and over as well as the sound the letter makes. We like to sing
The A says ah
The A says ah
Every letter makes a sound,
The A says ah
